Assurance Intern – Summer 2027 (Richmond) | BDO USA

The Tone:
This is a seasonal internship at BDO USA, located in Richmond, VA. BDO is a professional services firm that provides assurance, tax, and advisory services to clients across the U.S. and around the world, and is also an ESOP company. This role is for energetic self-starters to begin applying their educational background and organizational skills to serve a dynamic client base. It offers a unique hands-on perspective on the firm’s practices, the opportunity to build critical relationships, and helps clients navigate complexity to grow with confidence.

• Team: Part of an Assurance audit team, collaborating with experienced team members.
• Mission: This person will assist audit teams in problem-solving and fact-finding to serve the firm’s client base and support its practices.
• Tech Stack: Microsoft Office Suite, Excel, PowerPoint, Word

What You’ll Actually Do
• Participate in a structured training program to learn Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, Generally Accepted Auditing Standards, and BDO’s specific audit methodology.
• Assist with various stages of the audit process by providing support functions to the audit staff during client engagements.
• Communicate with clients’ customers, creditors, banks, and related parties concerning audit issues.
• Prepare and document work in working papers utilizing BDO specific tools and templates.
• Complete one assigned accounting or audit-related research project and present the findings to a panel of Assurance professionals.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Entry-Level; enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Accounting.
• Experience: No specific prior experience required; leadership experience is preferred.
• Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint); strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to follow instructions as directed; ability to work effectively in a team setting.
• Bonus: Pursuing a Master’s degree in Accounting; actively pursuing school credits to become a CPA; positive attitude and willingness to learn.
