Tax Intern, Core Tax Services – Summer 2027 (Columbia) | BDO USA

The Tone:
This is a seasonal internship at BDO USA, located in Columbia, MD. BDO is a firm that provides assurance, tax, and advisory services to clients across the U.S. and around the world, recognized as a place for energetic self-starters who can think and act like entrepreneurs. This role offers an intern the opportunity to utilize their educational background and organizational skills to provide service to the firm’s client base through tax return preparation and extensions. What You’ll Actually Do
• Tax Compliance: Prepare simple tax returns and extensions using tax software applications, ensuring data collection complies with filing requirements. This includes taking initiative on impending due dates and assisting with responses to notices from the Internal Revenue Service, while using referencing systems and organizing files to minimize rework.
• Tax Accruals: Assist with the components of income tax provisions, correctly and proactively applying Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM) regarding FAS 109 and FIN 48.
• Tax Consulting: Operate online research tools to gather pertinent tax information, assisting with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient methods to maximize client benefits by decreasing current and future taxes.
• Regulatory Monitoring: Monitor tax law and client factual developments on a regular basis, developing and communicating viewpoints to the client service team regarding how those developments might affect clients.
• Firm Policy Adherence: Ensure self and client service teams comply with all Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (“TQM”), especially in minimizing client tax and reporting burdens.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Entry-level, enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Accounting or a relevant field.
• Experience: No specific years of prior experience required. Leadership experience is preferred.
• Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to follow instructions as directed, and the ability to work effectively in a team setting with a positive attitude and willingness to learn. This includes the ability to prepare simple tax returns.
• Bonus: Pursuing a Master’s degree in Accounting or other relevant field, and actively pursuing school credits to become a CPA.
