Senior Risk Strategist – Fraud | Mercury

The Tone:
This is a full-time remote role at Mercury, based in the USA. Mercury is dedicated to building a comprehensive finance stack for startups, striving to provide the easiest and safest banking experience possible for entrepreneurs and business owners. To ensure this experience, the company requires a thorough understanding of its customers and their product interactions. This role is crucial for bringing deep domain expertise, a strong execution drive, and an analytical approach to the Risk Strategy team, significantly impacting various fraud domains.

• Mission: Shape and execute Mercury’s fraud strategy across multiple payment rails and fraud types using data-driven analysis and strategic problem-solving.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Strategy Ownership: Own strategy and execution across various fraud domains, including ACH, Check Deposits, Checkbooks, RTP, onboarding, and ATO, with a focus on results.
• Program Development: Drive Mercury’s Personal Banking fraud program build-out, applying consumer fintech expertise to design tailored controls and strategies for consumer account holders.
• Risk Mitigation: Use data and quantitative analysis to design fraud controls, mitigate risk, and enhance customer experience while balancing necessary trade-offs.
• Cross-functional Leadership: Lead cross-functional efforts with Product, Engineering, and Operations to design and implement scalable risk solutions.
• Domain Expertise: Serve as a domain expert across various fraud types, proactively identifying gaps and driving systemic improvements across fraud programs.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Senior-level professional with 6+ years of experience in an analytical role, including 4+ years dedicated to fraud detection and strategy.
• Experience: Proven ability to design and execute fraud strategies across multiple payment rails and fraud types (e.g., ACH, checks, RTP, onboarding, ATO, friendly fraud). Hands-on experience contributing to consumer/personal banking fraud programs, including familiarity with consumer-specific fraud patterns and regulatory contexts.
• Skills: Skilled in customer risk scoring/modeling and process automation. Strong SQL proficiency and the ability to translate data into actionable strategies. Excellent communication skills to simplify complex risk concepts into clear recommendations, alongside the ability to operate in ambiguity and make high-quality decisions with imperfect information.
• Bonus: Strong preference for consumer fintech experience. A curious, growth-oriented, and motivated approach to working on fraud problems across all lifecycle stages.
