Accounting Assistant | Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC)
The Tone:
This is a full-time, hybrid role with Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC), located near Arlington, VA. AHC is a mission-driven non-profit organization dedicated to developing and managing affordable, workforce, and mixed-income rental housing across the Virginia, Washington DC, and Baltimore regions. The Accounting Assistant role is critical for ensuring the financial accuracy and operational efficiency of the organization’s accounts payable, general ledger, and treasury functions, directly supporting its commitment to community impact and resident services.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Accounts Payable Management: Process and manage all incoming invoices, ensuring accurate coding, recording, and timely payment runs, while resolving discrepancies with vendors and internal teams.
• General Ledger & Financial Reconciliation: Prepare and post basic journal entries, maintain general ledger accuracy through timely reconciliations, and track cash receipts, donations, grants, and contributions.
• Month-End & Audit Support: Assist with month-end and year-end closing procedures, including bank and credit card reconciliations, and compile necessary documents for external audits and tax reporting like 1099/1096 forms.
• Treasury & Operational Support: Assist with basic cash monitoring by tracking daily inflows and outflows across bank accounts, provide operational support for wire transfers and ACH payments, and manage business credit card processes and employee reimbursements.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Proven experience in accounts payable or a general accounting support role, with a solid understanding of GAAP and basic general ledger accounting principles.
• Experience: Familiarity with accounting software such as MIP, Avid, or Concur, coupled with proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
• Skills: Exceptional organizational skills, high attention to detail, strong written and verbal communication, and the ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
