Lansing Board of Water & Light

The Lansing Board of Water & Light is a proud municipally owned public utility, deeply committed to serving its community. Our roots trace back to 1885, when Lansing citizens invested in building a vital water system for drinking and fire protection. Our service expanded to include electricity in 1892 and steam heat in 1919. As a not-for-profit entity, we sell no stock and pay no dividends, prioritizing reliable service and delivering Michigan’s lowest electric rates, often 20% below state averages.

Driven by local people, the Lansing Board of Water & Light is owned and operated by the community it serves, with rates set responsibly by our resident Board of Commissioners. This community-first approach has enabled us to grow into Michigan’s largest municipally owned utility and the state’s third-largest electric provider, also serving as a major employer in the Lansing area.
