Accountant, Tax | Kemper

The Tone:

The Tax Accountant plays a crucial part in ensuring adherence to tax rules and financial reporting standards while helping to optimize Kemper’s tax position across various jurisdictions.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Tax Compliance: Assist with multi-state insurance tax compliance initiatives, including the preparation and filing of state tax returns, coordinating cross-functional data to meet strict regulatory deadlines.
• Financial Analysis: Analyze the tax and financial statement implications of actual and proposed business activities, providing recommendations to optimize tax outcomes.
• Accounting Operations: Prepare journal entries and perform account reconciliations for various tax-related matters.
• Payment Processing: Initiate and process state and local tax payments, ensuring timely and accurate submission.
• Research & Improvement: Conduct tax research using available information services and technology, and participate in process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and strengthen controls.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, with 1-2 years of relevant experience in a corporate tax function or public accounting. Familiarity with State and Local Taxes, Premium Taxes, and insurance company taxation is required.
• Experience: 1-2 years of relevant experience with a cloud-based ERP environment, preferably Workday. Experience in managing deadlines and working independently within a complex environment.
• Skills: Strong working knowledge of Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Demonstrated ability to analyze and review tax law and/or accounting guidance and make sound recommendations. Good verbal communication and technical writing abilities are essential, alongside the capacity to identify, analyze, and logically frame issues.
• Bonus: Experience with Alteryx and/or Power BI.
