Financial Audit Intern | Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury

The Tone:
This is a 10-week paid educational and experiential learning internship at the Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury, located in Nashville, TN. The Office is responsible for the audit of state and local governmental entities and participates in the general financial and administrative management and oversight of state government. This program offers undergraduate students a chance to witness and participate in the audit operations, contributing to the office’s mission to make government work better. Interns will spend the summer building skills through active audit assignments, specific training, and professional development.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Examine: Learn to examine and review records, reports, and financial statements.
• Review: Review management practices for state and local government entities and other organizations receiving public funds.
• Evaluate: Evaluate the fairness of financial statement presentation and the adequacy of internal controls.
• Assess: Assess the efficiency and effectiveness of an entity’s operations and systems.
• Ensure: Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, contracts, and grant agreements.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Undergraduate student who is a rising junior or senior, or enrolled in a graduate accounting program, interested in governmental auditing.
• Experience: Successful completion of at least 6 credit hours of accounting coursework.
• Skills: Adaptability, critical thinking, strong interpersonal communication, verbal communication, organizational, and writing skills.
• Bonus: Completion of intermediate or advanced accounting classes.
