Accounting Specialist | Legacy Steel

The Tone:
This is a full-time role at Legacy Steel, located in Grand Rapids, MI. Legacy Steel is an established West Michigan steel erection contractor specializing in structural steel work for commercial and industrial construction projects, with approximately 60–80 employees. This role is crucial for developing broad, hands-on experience across multiple areas of accounting, working closely with the Controller to manage essential financial processes. The Accounting Specialist helps maintain accurate financial records and supports the company’s operational efficiency.

• Mission: To take ownership of recurring accounting processes and provide essential support across accounts receivable, payroll, and general accounting functions for a construction contractor.
• Tech Stack: Microsoft Excel, QuickBooks Desktop (or similar accounting software), payroll and HR systems

What You’ll Actually Do
• Accounts Receivable: Prepare and manage monthly AIA progress billings, maintain customer accounts, and process lien waivers.
• Payroll: Assist with biweekly payroll processing, collect and review employee time, and maintain accurate payroll records.
• Certified Payroll: Prepare prevailing wage payroll, generate certified payroll reports, and ensure all required documentation is submitted.
• General Accounting: Provide comprehensive accounting support to the Controller, assisting with customer and project-related accounting tasks.
• Record Management: Maintain accurate accounting records and documentation, and contribute to special projects and process improvements.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree in accounting with a strong understanding of fundamental accounting principles.
• Experience: Ability to work independently while knowing when to ask questions, coupled with strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, comfort in learning new systems, and strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Bonus: 1-2 years of accounting experience, construction accounting experience, experience with QuickBooks Desktop or similar accounting software, and experience with payroll or accounts receivable.
