Staff Accountant, General | Miami University

This Staff Accountant role is essential for maintaining the financial integrity and operational efficiency of the university, ensuring accurate record-keeping and supporting critical accounting functions within the General Accounting department. What You’ll Actually Do
• Oversee Close Processes: Perform comprehensive monthly and year-end close processes for the general ledger.
• Manage Journal Entries: Create, record, and approve various journal entries, ensuring accuracy and compliance with accounting standards.
• Reconcile Accounts: Conduct monthly reconciliations for university accounts, specifically related to accounts receivable and auxiliary business units.
• Support Auditing & Reporting: Prepare workpapers and draft related footnote disclosures for the annual year-end audit, coordinate the completion and submission of annual NCAA audit workpapers, and prepare certain state regulatory financial reporting.
• Maintain Financial Systems & Relations: Responsible for ERP system setup pertaining to various university business units and collaborate closely with Shared Services and Auxiliaries to maintain financial records and respond to accounting inquiries.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or General Business, preparing you for an early career accounting role focused on university financial operations.
• Experience: Ideal candidates will bring 1 year or more of professional accounting experience, particularly with ERP software systems. Experience with fund accounting is also highly valued.
• Skills: Demonstrated proficiency in Excel and other analytical software, coupled with excellent communication (verbal and written), analytical, time management, and organizational skills. A solid knowledge of GAAP and accrual-based accounting is required, along with the ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
• Bonus: An active CPA license, or having met the qualifications to sit for the CPA exam, is preferred. Working knowledge of FASB and/or GASB guidance would also be a strong asset.
