Accountant 1 (General Accounting and Defined Contribution Plans Division) | NEOGOV

The Tone:
This is a full-time hybrid role at NEOGOV for the State Employees’ Retirement System (SERS), located in Dauphin County, PA. SERS is one of the nation’s oldest and largest retirement plans for public employees, managing pension benefits for over 246,000 individuals across 96 public sector employers, with nearly $50 billion in assets. This Accountant 1 role is crucial within a small team, performing general accounting duties for the Defined Benefit Plan. • Mission: Assist with routine transaction processing and perform general accounting duties for the Defined Benefit Plan to ensure accurate financial reporting and support financial security for members.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Ledger Transactions: Record, classify, and post transactions to the general ledger.
• Contribution Processing: Handle checks and electronic payments received from SERS employers.
• Cash Movement: Perform daily cash movement tasks to ensure agreement with PA Treasury records.
• Journal Entries: Prepare and post journal entries to maintain accurate financial reporting.
• Account Reconciliation: Complete reconciliations as part of monthly and annual financial statement preparation.

The Must-Haves
• Background: This is an early career role requiring a Bachelor’s Degree that includes or is supplemented by at least fifteen college credits in accounting. Applicants within three months of graduating with a qualifying degree will also be considered.
• Experience: Candidates must demonstrate experience through one of the following paths: successful completion of the Commonwealth’s Accounting Intern Program; one year as a Fiscal Technician (or equivalent Federal Government job title) with fifteen college credits in accounting; one year as a Financial Programs Trainee (or equivalent Federal Government job title); or five years of bookkeeping experience combined with fifteen college credits in accounting.
• Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, strong organizational abilities, effective time management for deadlines and multiple priorities, a collaborative approach to teamwork, and a self-motivated work ethic.
