Intern – Finance & Accounting | Nelnet

The Tone:
This is an internship at Nelnet, likely located in Lincoln, NE. Nelnet is a diverse organization that serves as a student loan servicer, technology company, idea incubator, start-up accelerator, and an expert in K-12 and higher education. This role is crucial for providing essential financial and accounting support within Nelnet Business Solutions, ensuring critical financial operations run smoothly and assisting with the implementation of new financial tools. The intern will perform real work that contributes directly to the business’s financial health and operational efficiency.

• Mission: To provide support for financial analysis, clerical accounting tasks, and the implementation of a new company-wide financial tool.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Financial Analysis: Provide assistance with financial analysis activities, including supporting month-end close processes and fulfilling ad hoc requests.
• Clerical Accounting: Assist with various clerical accounting duties, such as processing lockbox transactions, managing cash deposits, or reviewing credit card chargebacks.
• System Implementation: Contribute to the implementation of a new financial tool that will be used across the entire company.
• Special Projects: Complete specific projects as they are assigned by management, contributing to various business needs.
• Operational Support: Provide backup assistance as directed by a supervisor and undertake other duties as assigned to support department operations.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Entry-Level professional working towards a degree in Accounting or Finance.
• Experience: Relevant work experience obtained within a Finance or Accounting department.
• Skills: Demonstrated attention to detail; proficiency in PC skills, specifically Microsoft Office, including Excel and Word; good oral and written communication abilities; and knowledge of fundamental accounting practices and procedures.
• Bonus: An energetic and enthusiastic attitude, a good work ethic and habits, the ability to follow directions accurately, and a willingness to learn new processes.
