Veterinary Extern, General Practice | NVA General Practice

This is an externship at Pet Medical Center of Katy, located in Katy, TX, designed for veterinary students seeking practical experience. What You’ll Actually Do
• Patient Assessment: Actively conduct comprehensive physical examinations and accurately collect detailed patient histories, ensuring thorough data gathering essential for integrated daily operations and comprehensive patient care. Externs will learn to evaluate patient conditions firsthand.
• Clinical Strategy: Collaborate closely with experienced veterinarians to develop effective diagnostic strategies, considering various possibilities, and formulate comprehensive treatment plans tailored to individual patient needs. This process is key to building confidence in critical clinical decision-making skills.
• Surgical Involvement: Participate directly in a range of veterinary procedures including dentistry and various soft tissue surgeries. The level of hands-on involvement will be carefully determined by the extern’s existing experience and comfort level, ensuring meaningful and safe exposure to surgical environments.
• Procedural Proficiency: Gain extensive hands-on experience in a wide array of clinical procedures, from routine vaccinations and sample collection to more complex medical interventions. This also includes active participation in overall case management, enhancing practical skills and confidence across diverse patient scenarios.
• Practice Integration: Actively learn how a high-quality veterinary practice operates efficiently behind the scenes, integrating into the daily workflow. This includes enhancing crucial client communication skills for effective patient and owner interactions, and strengthening team collaboration abilities within a supportive and engaging practice environment.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Entry-level veterinary student currently pursuing a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine, specifically in the clinical portion of their education.
• Experience: Currently enrolled and actively participating as a 3rd or 4th-year veterinary student.
