Veterinary Extern – General Practice | NVA General Practice

The Tone:
This is an externship at NVA General Practice, designed for clinical year veterinary students and offered across multiple unique NVA hospital locations. NVA General Practice fosters a supportive environment committed to delivering excellent medicine and providing exceptional service to both animals and the people who love them. This critical role gives students the unique opportunity to integrate into the day-to-day operations of a veterinary practice. Through this experience, externs will gain invaluable hands-on clinical exposure, honing their practical skills and preparing them for the rigors of a veterinary career.

The TL;DR

• Team: Works closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians.
• Mission: To provide veterinary students with hands-on clinical experience and insight into daily practice operations within a supportive environment.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Clinical Assessment: Gather detailed patient histories and perform comprehensive physical examinations to assess animal health.
• Medical Strategy: Collaborate with supervising veterinarians on the creation of effective treatment plans and the execution of diagnostic procedures to inform patient care.
• Procedural Involvement: Actively participate in dentistry services, and observe, assist with, or directly perform various surgical procedures under guidance.
• Patient Management: Contribute to the ongoing medical management of patients, monitoring their progress and adjusting care as needed.
• Professional Communication: Enhance communication skills by interacting effectively with the medical team, support staff, and pet owners regarding patient care.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Clinical year veterinary student currently enrolled in the clinical portion of their education. This role is an entry-level opportunity designed to bridge academic knowledge with practical application.
• Experience: No prior years of post-degree experience are required, as this program is tailored for students actively pursuing their Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. Direct participation in a clinical setting is the core experience gained.
• Skills: Demonstrated foundational clinical skills pertinent to veterinary medicine, including patient observation and basic diagnostic understanding. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential for effective interaction with colleagues and clients.
• Bonus: Eligibility for a travel and/or living expense stipend, designed to support students during their externship experience, with specific amounts and program details available for review.
