Veterinary Extern – General Practice | NVA General Practice

This is an externship position offered at an NVA General Practice hospital. • Team: Reports to supervising Associate Veterinarians, collaborates with medical team and support staff.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Patient Assessment: Actively gather comprehensive patient histories from clients and perform thorough physical examinations to establish foundational case understanding under veterinary supervision.
• Treatment Development: Collaborate with supervising Associate Veterinarians to create tailored treatment plans and select appropriate diagnostics for accurate diagnoses and effective patient care strategies.
• Clinical Procedures: Observe, assist in, or directly perform various clinical procedures, including dentistry services and surgical procedures, to gain hands-on practical skills in a supervised setting.
• Medical Management: Contribute to the ongoing medical management of patients, learning to monitor progress, adjust treatments, and ensure optimal animal health outcomes.
• Professional Communication: Actively practice and refine communication skills through effective interaction with the medical team, support staff, and clients, ensuring clear and compassionate information exchange within the practice.

The Must-Haves
• Background: This externship is specifically designed for Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) students who are actively enrolled in the clinical portion of their education, typically encompassing their final clinical year. This role represents an Entry-Level opportunity for aspiring veterinarians to bridge academic knowledge with practical application in a real-world general practice setting.
• Experience: While no prior professional veterinary practice experience is explicitly mandated, a strong preference is given to applicants who are already in the clinical year of their DVM program, indicating a readiness for hands-on involvement and a foundational understanding of core veterinary concepts.
• Skills: Successful externs will possess or develop proficient patient history taking capabilities, adept physical examination techniques, a foundational grasp of diagnostic principles, basic competency in assisting with dentistry services, and the ability to observe and actively assist in surgical procedures.
