Operations Manager | WM

The Tone:
This is a full-time, in-person role at WM, a 28,657-person organization dedicated to providing essential waste management and environmental services across the country. This critical position focuses on the growth and success of the company’s frontline drivers and helpers, ensuring they are well-equipped and supported in their daily duties. The Operations Manager plays a vital role in building strong, positive relationships with employees, fostering a culture of safety, and driving continuous improvement. By directly engaging with employees in the field, this role ensures operational excellence and adherence to the WM Way, contributing significantly to overall business success.

• Mission: Lead the onboarding, development, and performance management for all drivers and helpers to ensure successful operations and positive employee relationships.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Employee Development & Onboarding: Implement comprehensive onboarding processes, providing new frontline employees with essential tools, instruction, and consistent feedback. Conduct daily meetings with new hires to ensure ongoing support and communication for their successful integration.
• Performance Coaching & Mentorship: Provide timely and consistent touchpoints with all frontline employees, focusing on their understanding and progress toward career goals. Identify improvement opportunities and collaborate with individuals to ensure continued success through active coaching conversations.
• Safety & Incident Management: Lead by example to ensure safety practices are paramount, fostering a deep understanding of the WM Way. Conduct thorough Root Cause Investigations for all injuries and incidents, implementing consistent discipline and retraining to prevent recurrence.
• Operational Compliance & Auditing: Daily review and audit documentation related to route operations, including Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIRs), driver time and attendance records, and open tickets, following up diligently where appropriate.
• Customer Site Safety & Service: Visit customer and customer sites to proactively evaluate and resolve potential safety issues, seeking and implementing service alternatives when necessary to maintain high standards.

The Must-Haves
• Background: An Associate’s Degree from an accredited institution. In lieu of a degree, a High School Diploma from an accredited institution combined with two years of relevant work experience is required.
• Experience: A minimum of two years of work experience relevant to operations management, focusing on employee development and field supervision, if applying without an Associate’s Degree. Must be at least 18 years of age and legally eligible to work in the country where the position is located.
• Skills: Proven ability in employee onboarding, development, coaching, mentoring, and performance management; demonstrated skill in conducting thorough root cause investigations for incidents; strong understanding and commitment to safety practices; excellent ability to build and maintain positive relationships with frontline employees; meticulous attention to detail for documentation review and auditing; capability to teach and foster understanding of company standards (WM Way). A valid Driver’s License is required.
• Bonus: Successful completion of the WM Operations Manager Trainee program.
