Staff Attorney Fellow | The University of Kansas
The Tone:
This is a full-time, limited-term staff attorney fellow position at The University of Kansas, located on the KU Medical Center main hospital campus in Kansas City, Kansas. The KU School of Law Medical Legal Partnership provides free legal representation in critical areas like income supports, housing, and employment to patients and clients from low-income communities, those with mental health needs, or marginalized identities. This role offers new or recent law graduates an opportunity to provide direct legal care, addressing civil legal issues that act as barriers to health outcomes for a high-needs client population.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Representation: Conduct applications with and provide direct legal representation to clients with legal needs impacting their health.
• Supervision: Supervise, train, and mentor law students enrolled in the MLP externship experience in their direct legal representation of clients.
• Teaching: Serve as a teaching assistant to the Managing Attorney, especially regarding supervision of student intern work involving conducting applications for services.
• Outreach: Foster relationships with new and existing health providers to raise awareness of patient-client legal needs and facilitate referrals to the MLP.
• Relationship Management: Maintain relationships with health providers throughout the course of direct legal representation.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Eligible to practice law in the state of Kansas (license or temporary permit/certification pending bar results, or a reciprocal state license for application for the Kansas Bar). Must be a current KU Law 3L/upcoming KU Law graduate (Dec 2026, May 2027) or a recent KU Law graduate (Class of 2026 or 2025).
• Experience: Entry-level legal experience suitable for a new or recent law graduate, focusing on transactional civil legal issues.
• Skills: Strong communication, interpersonal skills, excellent oral advocacy, and writing skills. Excellent computer and word processing skills using Microsoft Office suite and commercial client management software.
• Bonus: Participation in the MLP field placement at KU Law. Demonstrated commitment to public service, advocacy, and social justice. Experience working with people from low-income communities, those with mental health needs, or vulnerable patient-client identities. Law license to practice (or bar exam score eligibility to apply) in Missouri. Second-language fluency in Spanish, Arabic, Nepali, Somali, or Burmese.
