Legal Response Specialist – USDS | TikTok USDS Joint Venture

The Tone:
This is a full-time, in-person role at TikTok USDS Joint Venture, located in the United States, including a regular rotation of one weekend day. TikTok USDS Joint Venture is dedicated to the safety and security of millions of Americans who create, discover, and connect on the apps we operate. The company safeguards the U.S. content ecosystem, holding decision-making authority for trust and safety policies and moderation, while operating under defined safeguards to protect national security and secure U.S. user data. This role is integral to the Safety Regulatory Compliance Operations (SRCO) Team, which is a multi-disciplinary team focused on risk detection, prevention, and handling to maintain a safe and secure online environment for users by actively monitoring and responding to emergent threats and ensuring compliance with legal regulations.

• Mission: To analyze and address time-sensitive legal processes and inquiries regarding user data from US law enforcement agencies, balancing corporate compliance responsibilities with appropriate operational safeguards to protect users and mitigate legal risk.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Legal Process Review: Review and respond to a range of legal process and preservation requests for user data from US law enforcement agencies, as mandated by the Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 1986 (ECPA), which includes preservation requests, subpoenas, court orders, and search warrants.
• Information Handling: Be responsible for handling sensitive information in a manner complying with our Terms of Service, applicable laws and regulations, and internal Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) while meticulously protecting user privacy.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional internal teams, including litigation and privacy teams, and external networks to resolve and respond to legal requests and deal with broader issues concerning safety and data disclosure.
• Process Improvement: Gather and analyze relevant data to identify trends, improve internal processes, and consistently communicate actionable insights to stakeholders across US and regional markets.
• Documentation & Procedures: Assist with drafting and improving internal documentation, workflows, and procedures concerning safety and data disclosure, and resolve inquiries from users and external parties related to data disclosure.

The Must-Haves
• Background: 2 years of work in Trust and Safety, Legal Compliance, Privacy, Legal Operations, or Corporate Legal teams, with knowledge of legal documents such as civil and criminal subpoenas, court orders, and search warrants.
• Experience: Proven successful record in handling sensitive matters and sensitive data.
• Skills: Excellent communication skills, especially concerning legal documents; ability to coordinate with global teams in different time-zones (especially Eastern Time Zone); and ability to address sensitive content issues including graphic images, videos, writings, offensive language, and child safety.
• Bonus: Strong attention to detail, highly self-driven and results-oriented; excellent organizational and deadline management skills; resilience and commitment to self-care to manage the emotional demands of the role.
