Housing Summer Intern | CAMBA

The Tone:
This is a temporary full-time internship at CAMBA, located in Brooklyn, NY, with hybrid remote options. CAMBA operates as a comprehensive community organization, offering over 180 integrated programs across various critical areas, from education and health to job training and legal services. The organization is dedicated to building an inclusive New York City where all individuals can thrive, serving almost 80,000 diverse New Yorkers, many of whom are low-income immigrants and refugees. This Housing Summer Intern role is crucial for CAMBA Legal Services, directly supporting their mission to preserve affordable housing for vulnerable communities in Brooklyn and Staten Island. The intern will play a direct part in providing legal assistance to low-income individuals and families facing threats of eviction, harassment, or habitability issues, thereby contributing to economic justice and stable housing.

The TL;DR

• Mission: Preserve affordable housing for low-income communities by representing individuals and families throughout Brooklyn and Staten Island who are facing threats of eviction, harassment, or issues of habitability.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Client Intake & Assessment: Conduct client intake and assessment of client cases, including interviewing clients in preparation for litigation and/or court proceedings.
• Legal Research & Document Preparation: Prepare various legal documents and conduct legal research, including analyzing statutes, judicial decisions, and legal codes in landlord/tenant proceedings.
• Evidence & Strategy Development: Gather evidence to formulate defenses or institute legal action on clients’ behalf, supporting the development of legal strategies, arguments, and testimonies.
• Litigation Filings & Appeals: Draft and file motions, briefs, pleadings, legal memos, and appeals, reviewing documentation for accuracy, completeness, and clarity.
• Case Management & Communication: Record case notes and outcomes in a timely fashion in CLS’s data base, maintain accurate client files, and communicate effectively with clients, staff, peers, and supervisors.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Requires a Bachelor’s Degree and active enrollment as a first- or second-year law student (1L or 2L).
• Experience: Demonstrated commitment to public interest work, non-profit organizations, and economic justice initiatives.
• Skills: Possesses excellent written and verbal communication, strong interpersonal skills, and proficiency in Outlook, Word, Excel, and other Microsoft Office Suite products. The role also requires excellent research and writing skills, including the ability to interpret laws, rulings, and regulations.
