Criminal Justice Internship – Fall 2026 | State of Iowa – Executive Branch

The Tone:
This is an unpaid internship position within the 5th District, Department of Corrections, part of the State of Iowa’s Executive Branch. Located primarily in Des Moines, with opportunities in 15 other counties, this role offers students practical learning opportunities within the community-based corrections system. Interns will gain valuable exposure to probation and court operations, legal processes, and public service while supporting Probation/Parole Officers and other district staff.

The TL;DR

• Mission: To provide students with practical experience and exposure to the community-based corrections system and legal processes.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Supervision: Learn and apply supervision processes for adult and/or juvenile clients within the community-based corrections system.
• Compliance Monitoring: Observe and monitor client compliance with probation conditions, including employment, treatment, restitution, and community service requirements.
• Assessment & Planning: Perform risk and needs assessments and assist in developing comprehensive supervision plans for clients.
• Collaboration: Collaborate with staff mentors, treatment providers, law enforcement, judges, and various community agencies to support client success.
• Court Proceedings: Attend court proceedings, trials, and hearings, gaining insight into legal processes and addressing probation violations.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Must be currently enrolled in a degree program at an accredited educational institution and have completed at least two years of college by the internship start date.
• Experience: Must be 18 years of age or older, comfortable working in a criminal justice environment.
• Skills: Demonstrate a professional demeanor, strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work independently, multitask, and follow instructions.
• Bonus: Preferred majors or coursework include Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology, Law, Political Science, or Public Administration.
