Paralegal – Portland, OR/Seattle, WA (Hybrid) | Littler

The Tone:
Littler is the largest global employment and labor law practice exclusively representing management, with over 1,900 attorneys in over 100 offices worldwide. This hybrid role, based in Portland, OR or Seattle, WA, involves supporting attorneys and other paralegals through all stages of the litigation process. The Paralegal is crucial in ensuring seamless case progression, from initial review and discovery to trial preparation and post-trial assistance, requiring significant independence and problem-solving abilities.

• Mission: To assist attorneys and other paralegals in all stages of the litigation process, working independently with strong problem-solving skills.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Case Evaluation Support: Conduct initial case reviews to assist attorneys, drafting case chronologies, “cast of characters,” answers, and other pleadings, and overseeing client document intake.
• Discovery Process Coordination: Draft discovery requests and responses for attorney review, coordinate the production of documentary responses, and review the sufficiency of written and documentary responses, including attending document production.
• Deposition Management: Coordinate and schedule lay and expert depositions, draft deposition outlines, select potential exhibits for attorney review, summarize transcripts, and prepare/serve subpoenas.
• Trial Preparation and Assistance: Coordinate the compilation of trial binders, trial and demonstrative exhibits, assist with motions in limine, jury instructions, witness/exhibit lists, draft examinations, and operate trial preservation software during trial.
• Legal and Factual Research: Perform basic legal and medical research utilizing library books, online tools, and the internet, including cite checking and shepardizing, and assist in factual investigations by interviewing witnesses and conducting public records searches.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree or relevant experience, coupled with a solid working understanding of litigation issues and processes.
• Experience: Minimum of 3 – 10 years of experience as a paralegal in a law firm or corporate law department. Preferred experience includes coordinating case clerks and other paralegals, as well as managing all phases of case management for class actions and document intensive litigation utilizing automated databases and automated document retrieval and imaging systems.
• Skills: Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, LiveNote, Relativity, and other litigation support programs, alongside strong online research capabilities. Demonstrated interpersonal skills are necessary for effective communication with diverse attorneys, staff, and clients, ensuring confidentiality and professional interaction. The ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and complete them efficiently under time constraints is also essential.
• Bonus: Trial experience is preferred, as is experience with Trial Director software. A Paralegal Certificate is also preferred, and familiarity with Oregon State and Federal courts and court procedures is a plus.
