Established in 1800 by State Legislature as a fourth-class county, Centre County is strategically located in the state’s geographic center. As Pennsylvania’s fifth-largest county by geographic size, it spans 1,110 square miles across 35 municipalities, fostering a diverse economy driven by key industries including tourism, retail, agriculture, electronics, chromatography, information technology, printing, publishing, wood manufacturing, and education. A three-member Board of County Commissioners oversees legislative and executive functions, managing a 2022 budget of $107.8 million to provide comprehensive administrative, criminal justice, human services, judiciary, property, tax, and public safety/emergency services to residents, supported by 525 full-time and 42 part-time/seasonal employees.
