What You’ll Actually Do
• Adjudicate: Conduct hearings and make decisions in accordance with established agency policy, rules, and applicable laws.
• Document: Prepare written decisions based upon evidence presented in the record.
• Research: Prepare for hearings by researching relevant laws, regulations, policies, and legal precedents.
• Communicate: Respond to inquiries from the public and other agency departments.
• Train: Provide guidance to others and prepare and conduct training sessions as required.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Graduation from an accredited law school approved by the American Bar Association.
• Experience: Hearings Officer II requires one year, and Hearings Officer III requires two years of full-time experience in the practice of law, legal work as a primary duty, or the administration of industrial or labor relations. Experience and education may be substituted for one another, but a law degree is always required.
• Skills: Strong organizational skills, keen attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities while consistently meeting strict deadlines.
• Bonus: Admission to the State Bar of Texas, experience conducting administrative hearings (including Payday Law or Tax liability hearings), experience preparing written decisions using Microsoft Word and other computer programs, and broad knowledge of agency programs.
