Paralegal I | Utah County Government

The Tone:
This is an entry-level position within the Utah County Attorney’s Office, located in Provo, UT. Utah County Government prioritizes public service, aiming to enhance community well-being and provide legal protection and representation. This role is vital to the success of the county, contributing to the vigorous prosecution and investigation of crime, compassionate assistance for victims, and high-quality legal representation for the government.

• Pay: $26.74–$30.74 Hourly
• Team: Assigned to the Bureau of Investigations, Criminal Division, or Civil Division within the Utah County Attorney Office, working under close to general supervision.
• Mission: To support the legal functions of the County Attorney’s Office by conducting research, preparing documents, and aiding trial preparation to protect Utah County.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Research: Conduct legal research to gather relevant information and precedents for various cases.
• Document Preparation: Prepare a variety of legal documents, ensuring accuracy and compliance with legal standards.
• Trial Support: Support trial preparation activities, which includes organizing evidence and assisting attorneys with case readiness.
• Case Screening: Perform initial case screening to assess cases and determine appropriate next steps within the legal process.
• Administrative Support: Facilitate witness preparation and manage all necessary record requests for legal proceedings.

The Must-Haves
• Background: This is an entry-level classification. Candidates are required to possess an Associate degree in Paralegal or Legal Assistant Studies from an accredited college or university.
• Experience: Alternatively, this requirement can be met with a Bachelor’s degree in a related field; or an Associate degree in a related field combined with two (2) years of legal assistant or paralegal work experience; or a minimum of eight (8) years of legal assistant or paralegal work experience. Incumbents must obtain and maintain certification as a paralegal or legal assistant from NALA, NFPA, or AAPI within twenty-four (24) months in position. Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license and obtain a valid State of Utah driver’s license within sixty (60) days of employment.
• Skills: Proficiency in conducting legal research, preparing legal documents, supporting trial preparation, handling initial case screening, performing witness preparation, and processing record requests.
• Bonus: Preference may be given to applicants with a documented typing speed of forty (40) WPM or more. Preference may also be given to applicants who are bilingual in English and Spanish.
