Research Associate – Biotechnology | Oppenheimer & Co. Inc.

The Tone:
This is a full-time role at Oppenheimer & Co. Inc., located in New York City. Oppenheimer is a leading middle-market investment bank and full-service broker-dealer with deep roots in the financial services industry. This position plays a critical role within the Biotechnology equity research team, contributing essential analysis and insights that directly inform investment decisions for clients.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Model: Build and meticulously maintain financial models and market trackers to support in-depth investment analysis.
• Analyze: Perform fundamental analysis and comprehensive due diligence on biotechnology companies, assessing their market position and drug development.
• Report: Write and produce investment-driven research reports, company initiations, and marketing presentations, often adhering to tight deadlines.
• Research: Develop and field industry surveys, attend relevant medical and scientific conferences, and undertake extensive industry and competitive assessments.
• Network: Interface broadly with company management, scientific and investor conferences, key opinion leaders, institutional investor clients, and internal sales and trading personnel.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Candidates must possess a Master’s degree (MS) in biology or a similar scientific field. An advanced degree such as a PhD, MD, or MBA is strongly preferred, aligning with the “Others” career level for specialized expertise.
• Experience: Requires one to two years of experience in equity research or a related financial field, specifically demonstrating proficiency in financial modeling and exposure to equity markets.
• Skills: Essential skills include strong financial modeling, accounting, valuation, and quantitative abilities with critical attention to detail. Excellent written communication and analytical skills are required for producing high-quality research reports, alongside proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
• Bonus: Prior exposure to the financial markets and day-to-day responsibilities of an equity research associate is highly advantageous. Proficiency with FactSet, Symphony, or Bloomberg, and the ability to become fully licensed with FINRA Registrations (SIE, Series 7/63/86/87) within 6-12 months are also beneficial.
