Intern | KCRA 3 & My58 Television

The Tone:
This is a seasonal internship at KCRA 3 & My58 Television, located in Sacramento, CA. KCRA/KQCA TV is the Hearst Television station in Sacramento, operating within Hearst Television’s extensive network of 35 TV and two radio stations across 27 media markets, collectively reaching over 22 million U.S. television households. This role offers an invaluable opportunity to understand the comprehensive functions of a television station, explore the various career paths available within the industry, and recognize the vital role the station plays in serving its community. Interns will contribute to bringing news to air and digital platforms, gaining hands-on experience across multiple departments.

What You’ll Actually Do
News Gathering & Coordination: Within the Assignment Desk, assist team members by gathering news and information, including taking and placing telephone calls from various sources such as reporters, government agencies, and the general public, and support with additional research tasks.
Broadcast News Production: Gain hands-on experience by practicing writing and formatting scripts specifically for broadcast television, and observe news operations by shadowing reporters or anchors during live field reports.
Digital Content Creation & Engagement: Contribute to KCRA’s digital presence by helping research and write content for the KCRA app, KCRA.com, and diverse social media platforms, with opportunities to assist in photo and video production for digital use, and support social media and email communications.
Sports News Production: Assist the Sports department by monitoring national sports feeds and accounts for breaking news, logging all recorded sports events, writing scripts for daily sportscasts, researching team and player statistics, pitching new story ideas, and potentially accompanying reporters on location shoots.
Weather Analysis & Presentation: Support the Weather team by analyzing weather charts and models, preparing daily forecasts, producing essential weather graphics, assisting meteorologists in gathering critical weather information, relaying data to other departments, researching statistical data, and practicing forecast delivery in-studio.

• Background: Student interested in understanding television news operations, production, and its community role.
• Experience: No specific prior experience required for this learning and development opportunity.
• Skills:
Communication: Ability to effectively take and place telephone calls, gather information, and relay critical data between departments.
Writing: Proficiency in drafting and formatting scripts for broadcast and creating engaging content for digital platforms including web and social media.
Research: Aptitude for conducting thorough research to gather news, monitor feeds, analyze data, and prepare factual content.
Observation & Assistance: Capacity to shadow professionals, assist with field work, and support various departmental tasks efficiently.
