Internship, Embedded Software Engineer, Steering, Chassis Systems | Tesla

The Tone:
This is an internship position at Tesla, expected to start in August or September 2026 and continue for at least 12 weeks, full-time and on-site. Tesla is a leading company dedicated to building advanced vehicles, and this role contributes to developing critical embedded software for the steering system. As a member of the Chassis Systems Software team, you will be solving challenging problems in vehicle control, motor controls, safety systems, and embedded software engineering that are vital for the performance and safety of Tesla’s production vehicles.

• Team: Member of the Tesla steering firmware team within the Chassis Systems Software team, which combines software, mechatronics, and vehicle dynamics engineers.
• Mission: Deliver high-quality embedded code that controls the steering rack and feedback actuator on steer-by-wire systems to build the safest and most performant vehicle control systems.
• Tech Stack: C code, microcontrollers, PCBAs

What You’ll Actually Do
• Coding: Deliver high-quality C code within a real-time embedded environment.
• Design: Specify, design, and implement the functionality and behaviors of embedded subsystems.
• Architecture: Design the software architecture and firmware implementation on hardware through integration, testing, and high-volume manufacturing.
• Debugging: Perform hands-on hardware bring-up, system debugging, and code optimization.
• Optimization: Make performance and optimization trade-offs to meet product requirements.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Actively pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field, with a graduation date between December 2026 and December 2027.
• Experience: Demonstrated strong, hands-on, C coding experience.
• Skills: Proficiency in C programming for real-time embedded environments.
• Bonus: Experience with embedded development, low-level development on microcontrollers, working on complex PCBAs, writing software on controllers, bringing up multi-disciplinary systems driven by software, and knowledge of physics, mechanical, and electrical systems.
