Software Engineer I (Backend) | WHOOP
The Tone:
This is a full-time Software Engineer I position at WHOOP, located in Boston, MA. This role is crucial for designing, developing, and maintaining the core services that power WHOOP’s product experiences, directly impacting the quality of insights delivered to members. What You’ll Actually Do
• Develop: Contribute to the development and maintenance of backend services and APIs that power WHOOP’s member-facing features.
• Collaborate: Partner with cross-functional teams across Product, Design, Data Science, and Engineering to translate requirements into well-scoped technical solutions.
• Code: Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code, participating in code reviews to continuously improve engineering quality and standards.
• Support: Aid in the operation and monitoring of production systems, helping to troubleshoot issues and ensure reliability, scalability, and performance.
• Deliver: Break down feature requirements into actionable tasks, identify risks early, and iterate quickly to deliver value to members.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Professional experience in backend software development, including internships, co-ops, or academic projects. Understanding of fundamental computer science concepts like data structures, algorithms, and basic system design.
• Experience: Building or interacting with RESTful APIs and relational databases such as Postgres or other SQL-based systems. Familiarity with version control systems like Git and standard development workflows.
• Skills: Proficiency in an object-oriented programming language like Java, or the demonstrated ability to quickly learn new backend technologies. Strong problem-solving abilities and effective communication skills for cross-functional collaboration.
• Bonus: Interest in distributed systems, event-driven architectures (e.g., Kafka), and cloud platforms like AWS. A growth mindset with a willingness to seek feedback and continuously improve.
