Safety Intern | HENSEL PHELPS

The Tone:
This is a seasonal or temporary internship at Hensel Phelps, located in-person at various project sites. Hensel Phelps, founded in 1937, is an employee-owned general contractor specializing in building development, construction, and facility services across diverse markets including aviation, government, commercial, and healthcare. This role is crucial for supporting the project team in achieving successful construction project completion by helping to ensure a safe working environment. The internship provides an opportunity for both the intern and the company to assess potential for a long-term career after graduation.

The TL;DR

• Location: In-person, various project locations

• Team: Reports to the Safety Manager and supports the project team.
• Mission: Assists the project team in planning, monitoring work activities, and correcting unsafe acts or conditions to ensure successful project completion.
• Tech Stack: Microsoft Office Suite (specifically Excel based templates), Primavera, AutoDesk Suite.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Program Immersion: Gain comprehensive knowledge of the company’s Safety & Health Program.
• Regulatory Compliance: Learn applicable safety and health regulations and understand effective methods for their company-wide implementation.
• On-Site Support: Assist Project Superintendents with project site-specific safety orientations and other essential safety training sessions.
• Field Observation: Maintain a visible presence in the field to conduct safety observations and proactively identify potential hazards.
• Documentation & Review: Support the development and review of Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs) and assist the project team in conducting project safety audits.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Student pursuing a 4-year degree.
• Experience: Entry-level role, with a focus on gaining an understanding of the construction process.
• Skills: Strong communication skills; proficiency in computer software including Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel based templates), Primavera, and AutoDesk Suite.
• Bonus: Pursuing a 4-year degree in Occupational Safety & Health is preferred.
