Baltimore, Maryland’s largest city and the 29th-most populous in the U.S., stands as the nation’s largest independent city, established directly by the state’s constitution. Rich in heritage, it boasts more public monuments per capita than any other U.S. city and features some of the nation’s earliest National Register historic districts, such as Fell’s Point (1969), Federal Hill (1970), and Mount Vernon Place (1971).
