Engineering Intern (1099 Contractor) | Safe-Way Garage Doors

The Tone:
This is an Engineering Intern (1099 Independent Contractor) position located on-site in Tempe, Arizona, at First United Door Technologies / Safe-Way Door. The company builds quality garage doors and seeks a driven, detail-oriented individual to join its manufacturing engineering team. This role is crucial for making an immediate impact within a production environment by improving the underlying business and manufacturing systems. It offers a hands-on opportunity to work directly with various teams to engineer real solutions, solving problems and and understanding how products are built, rather than performing theoretical tasks.

What You’ll Actually Do
• BOM Management: You will maintain and update Bill of Materials (BOM) structures, ensuring day-to-day engineering data accuracy, and actively troubleshoot any BOM discrepancies encountered within the manufacturing process.
• Product Configuration & System Support: You will participate in weekly open order BOM reviews, support commercial and custom product configurations, and assist with configurator logic, backend data maintenance, and ERP/master data cleanup initiatives.
• Inventory & ERP System Operations: You will assist with backflush reconciliation, help align inventory and production transactions, and support costing accuracy and purchasing data integrity within the ERP system.
• Continuous Improvement: You will identify process improvement opportunities, help streamline engineering workflows, and support critical documentation and data governance efforts to enhance efficiency and reliability across operations.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: You will work directly with engineering, production, inventory, purchasing, and operations teams to gain exposure to real manufacturing processes and business systems.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Engineering student or recent graduate in Industrial, Mechanical, Manufacturing, Systems, or a similar field.
• Experience: Strong Excel and data management skills; comfortable working directly within a manufacturing environment.
• Skills: Analytical mindset with strong attention to detail; able to communicate effectively across multiple departments.
• Bonus: Experience with ERP systems, manufacturing data, inventory transactions, product configuration systems, or Lean/process improvement concepts.
