Job Description
Project Engineer – Construction
This position is accountable for planning, directing, and coordinating activities of designated construction projects to ensure that project goals and objectives are accomplished within the prescribed time frame and funding parameters. The Project Engineer will perform these duties personally or through subordinates if applicable. This role requires the ability and flexibility to work varying shifts, long hours (8-12 hours), and weekend hours according to project needs.
Specific Responsibilities
- Assists in Project Planning: Aids in the preparation and planning of pre-job meetings, including review of plans, specifications, budgets, cost targets, and scheduling.
- Project Management Support: Provides comprehensive assistance to Project Manager(s) in the management of all assigned jobs.
- Document Review & Processing: Reviews and processes shop drawings and submittals (including those from subcontractors), meticulously checking for accuracy against original drawings and specifications.
- Drawing Revision Management: Distributes all drawing revisions to Project Manager(s), Superintendent(s), and Subcontractors, and requests new shop drawings from suppliers and subcontractors as necessary to match revisions.
- Cost & Revision Tracking: Prices all drawing revisions and Field Extra Work Tickets, reviews them with Project Manager(s), and submits them to the General Contractor or client. Updates stick sets and drawing logs with each revision received.
- Log Maintenance: Maintains the RCO log and PM Submittal Log for each assigned project.
- Schedule Management: Keeps all project schedules updated with actual durations for each task compared to the original Base-Line Schedule, documenting all applicable delays (weather, GC, suppliers, others).
- Material Procurement: Orders, ensures timely delivery, and reviews the accuracy of essential construction materials such as rebar, shoring, forming, and post-tensioning.
- Site Coordination & Problem Solving: Frequently contacts Superintendent(s) on assigned jobs and regularly visits job sites to identify problems and assist in reaching solutions.
- Invoice Approval & Coding: Approves and codes assigned invoices as requested by the project manager.
- Cost Tracking: Tracks Manhours & Job Cost for all assigned jobs on a weekly basis.
- Budget Management: Meets with Superintendents to identify target costs to complete jobs under budget.
- Financial Reporting: Assists Project Manager(s) with End of Month Financial Reports for all assigned jobs.
- Reporting & Documentation: Prepares project reports for management, clients, or others.
- Regulatory Coordination: Coordinates project activities with those of government regulatory or other governmental agencies.
- Confidentiality: Maintains confidentiality by not disclosing any confidential, proprietary, or trade secret information belonging to the Company.
- Safety Compliance: Responsible and accountable for personal safety, the safety of all co-workers, and others encountered. Authorized and obligated to stop work on any task or series of tasks whenever an unsafe condition or situation is anticipated or observed.
- Policy Adherence: Complies with all applicable laws, regulations, and Company policies and procedures. Promptly reports all violations.
- Other Duties: Performs other related administrative and technical duties as assigned or requested by immediate supervision (e.g., certification training, safety training, procedure review).
Position Requirements
- Experience: A minimum of one (1) year of construction-related experience.
- Education: BS Degree in Construction Management or a related discipline, combined with field experience in commercial concrete construction, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Technical Knowledge: Working knowledge of Project Engineer functions.
- Computer Skills: Excellent proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), MS Project, Adobe, construction drawings software (e.g., PlanGrid), and the ability to learn new software systems.
- Communication Skills: Outstanding verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with employees at all levels, clients, vendors, and suppliers.
- Leadership & Resilience: Strong leadership skills with the ability to work well under pressure and high-stress situations.
- Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple projects, meet tight deadlines, and adapt to changing work priorities.
- Analytical Skills: Problem-solving, critical thinking, and analytical skills for optimizing project efficiency.
- Work Environment Adaptability: Ability to work in different weather conditions (heat, cold, etc.) and office settings (e.g., office trailer at the field).
Physical/Mental Requirements
- Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.
- Must be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by the work performed and location (e.g., hard hat, safety glasses, respirators, earplugs, steel-toed shoes).
- Must possess the ability to remain calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as directed by Safety Representatives or management.
- Must be capable of evacuating the work area in a timely manner should an emergency arise.
