New Roots Marketing Intern | International Rescue Committee (IRC)

The Tone:
This is an unpaid, hybrid internship at International Rescue Committee (IRC), located in Salt Lake City, UT. The IRC is a leading humanitarian organization founded to assist people affected by conflict and disaster worldwide. This role is crucial for promoting the New Roots program’s farmers markets, which empower refugees to achieve self-sufficiency by connecting them with community gardens and farm sites. The intern will play a central role in ensuring market operations run smoothly and providing an excellent customer experience.

The TL;DR
• Role: Internship
• Type: Seasonal (May 11 – October 20th), Part-time (15-20 hours per week)
• Location: Salt Lake City, UT (Hybrid)

• Team: Reports directly to the New Roots Market Coordinator.
• Mission: Promote New Roots farmers markets in the greater Salt Lake area and ensure their smooth operation to support refugee farmers.
• Tech Stack: Microsoft Word, Excel

What You’ll Actually Do
• Promote: Conduct outreach to customers in Salt Lake City and West Valley areas and create targeted marketing campaigns for farmers markets and CSA programs.
• Train: Assist the market team in developing and implementing farmer trainings, including how to sell on farmer-run CSA programs.
• Operate: Manage in-person farmers market staffing and assist New Roots staff with managing farmers markets.
• Analyze: Perform farmers market data entry and maintain accurate records for market operations.
• Coordinate: Responsible for pricing CSA vegetables, managing CSA bag allocations, and assisting farmers with writing weekly vegetable lists and labeling.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Demonstrated interest or background in food systems, agriculture, community development, public health, anthropology/cultural studies, and/or marketing.
• Experience: Valid driver’s license, active insurance policy, and access to reliable transportation. A background check is required for this position.
• Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and basic computer skills; strong written communication skills including distilling complex information concisely; motivated, creative, reliable, and able to work independently.
• Bonus: Experience working with English as a Second Language learners and communicating with an interpreter; familiarity with CSAs, local food systems, and food access programming.
