Firefighter/Paramedic | City of Poway Fire Department

The Tone:
This is a full-time role at the City of Poway Fire Department, located in Poway, CA. This role is critical for protecting life and property by responding to a full spectrum of emergencies, including fires, medical incidents, and hazardous materials.

The TL;DR

• Team: Receives general supervision from a Fire Captain.
• Mission: To respond to all fires, medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, rescues, and other emergent and non-emergent situations to protect life and property.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Respond: Lead emergency responses to all fire alarms, medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, rescues, and other critical situations.
• Suppress: Implement fire suppression and firefighting techniques, perform search and rescue operations, ventilate structures, and operate fire streams and specialized equipment.
• Provide: Administer advanced first aid and basic life support as a Paramedic for emergency medical calls, including patient assessment and life-saving treatments.
• Maintain: Perform overhaul operations, conduct salvage duties, ensure equipment is clean and operable, and maintain fire station facilities and apparatus.
• Engage: Participate in ongoing training, public awareness activities, fire inspections, and complete necessary administrative duties and reports.

The Must-Haves
• Background:
• Certificate: Possess and maintain a Firefighter I Certificate from the California State Fire Marshal or graduation from an accredited Fire Academy within the State of California; Possess and maintain a valid EMT-P license issued by the State of California; Possess and maintain a valid Hazardous Material Fire Responder Operations certificate.
• Career level: Entry-Level or Lateral.
• Education: Equivalent to completion of the 12th grade.
• Experience:
• For Lateral Candidates: One year of consecutive, full-time experience as a Firefighter/Paramedic (or higher-level fire position) with an all-hazard municipal, county, state, fire district, tribal or federal fire department/agency, and currently employed.
• For Entry-Level Candidates: Must be on FCTC’s Statewide Eligibility List (SEL), with a passing FCTC Written Test dated within one year and a Cal-JAC CPAT Card dated within six months.
• Skills:
• A valid Class C driver’s license.
• Proficiency in emergency response, including fire suppression, search and rescue, hazardous materials containment, and technical rescues.
• Ability to administer advanced first aid and basic life support effectively in high-stress emergency medical situations.
• Competence in operating and maintaining a variety of fire vehicles, apparatus, emergency medical equipment, and other firefighting tools.
• Bonus: Experience working for an agency that provides fire protection services and/or paramedic services (desirable for entry-level); College-level coursework from an accredited educational institution in fire science, or a related field.
