Online Guitar Tutor | Varsity Tutors

This is a contract role at Varsity Tutors, located remotely. Varsity Tutors operates a Live Learning Platform that connects thousands of students nationwide with online tutors. This role is crucial for delivering personalized guitar instruction, helping students achieve their musical goals and fostering a lasting passion for learning through advanced teaching tools.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Teach: Provide personalized 1-on-1 or instant online guitar instruction to students.
• Schedule: Set and manage your own flexible tutoring hours.
• Guide: Facilitate students’ musical development and understanding across various guitar styles and skill levels.
• Adapt: Tailor instruction to individual learning needs using method books, song arrangements, and technique exercises.
• Invoice: Submit timely invoices for completed tutoring sessions to ensure payment.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Deep knowledge of guitar technique including fretting, strumming, fingerpicking, chord voicings, scales, music theory for guitar, tablature and standard notation reading, and repertoire across acoustic, electric, classical, and popular styles. Capability to explain complex concepts such as barre chords and modal scales, and to prepare students for performance, auditions, and music coursework. Familiarity with various guitar pedagogy methods and common challenges, supporting learners from absolute beginners through advanced players.
• Experience: Skill in teaching progressive guitar technique, smooth chord transitions, and musical expression. Ability to guide students through proper hand positioning, open and barre chord mastery, scale pattern navigation, fingerpicking technique, and effective song learning approaches, emphasizing connecting technique to musical goals, practice strategies, and broader music concepts.
• Skills: Excellent communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style. Strong aptitude for adapting instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles. Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with and explain material using multiple approaches.
