What We Look For In a High School Computer Science Tutor
- Advanced Subject Mastery:
- Deep knowledge of computational thinking, programming fundamentals (especially Python or Java), data types, control structures, functions, arrays, basic algorithms, and debugging.

- Aptitude for guiding students through writing programs with variables and loops, implementing simple algorithms, designing solutions to computational problems, and using development environments.
- Emphasis on building computational thinking skills and connecting computer science concepts to real-world applications such as robotics, game design, and technology.
- Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction:
- Familiarity with high school computer science standards, including CSTA frameworks.
- Awareness of common student challenges like abstract thinking about algorithms, debugging syntax and logic errors, and fostering persistence through coding challenges.
- Ability to adapt instruction using visual programming tools, interactive coding platforms, and engaging projects to support students from introductory “exploring computer science” levels through pre-AP preparation.
- Effective Teaching Methods:
- Proven ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with.
- Capacity to explain material using multiple approaches and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
- Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
- Flexibility to adapt to diverse learning styles and student requirements.
