What We Look For In a Philosophy Tutor

  • Advanced Subject Mastery:
    • Deep knowledge of epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, logic, philosophy of mind, political philosophy, aesthetics, and the history of philosophy from ancient Greeks through contemporary thinkers.
    • Ability to explain Socratic method, deductive and inductive reasoning, major ethical frameworks, and key arguments in philosophy.
    • Capable of preparing students for advanced philosophy coursework, critical thinking, and graduate study.
  • Conceptual Teaching & Problem-Solving:
    • Skilled at teaching philosophical argument analysis, logical reasoning, and essay construction.
    • Guides students through evaluating validity and soundness of arguments, comparing ethical theories (including utilitarianism and deontology), analyzing thought experiments, and constructing well-reasoned philosophical essays.
    • Emphasizes developing critical thinking skills and connects philosophy to law, medicine, technology ethics, and public policy debates.
  • Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction:
    • Familiar with philosophy curricula from introductory through advanced levels.
    • Aware of common challenges such as understanding abstract concepts, constructing formal logical arguments, and engaging with dense philosophical texts.
    • Adapts instruction using thought experiments, structured discussion, and guided reading strategies to support students from introductory philosophy through advanced undergraduate and pre-graduate coursework.
  • Effective Teaching Methods:
    • Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with.
    • Explains material using multiple approaches and adapts instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
    • Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style are essential.
    • Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
