Statistics Graduate Level Tutor | Varsity Tutors

The Tone:
This is a contract role at Varsity Tutors, located remotely. Varsity Tutors builds a Live Learning Platform designed to transform how people learn by leveraging advanced technology, AI, and learning science. This role matters because it directly empowers graduate-level students to achieve academic success and a deeper understanding of complex statistical concepts through personalized, one-on-one instruction. Tutors make a significant impact on students’ educational journeys from the comfort of their own homes.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Tutoring: Provide personalized 1-on-1 online instruction to graduate-level statistics students across the nation.
• Conceptual Explanation: Break down and explain complex statistical concepts, including likelihood function derivations, posterior distribution calculations, and ANOVA decompositions.
• Problem-Solving Guidance: Guide students through designing experiments, performing multivariate analysis, constructing confidence regions, and implementing statistical models in software.
• Curriculum Support: Adapt instruction to align with graduate statistics curricula, addressing common challenges and preparing students for research methodology.
• Adaptive Teaching: Identify concepts students struggle with and explain material using multiple approaches, adjusting to individual learning needs and styles.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Deep knowledge and advanced subject mastery in mathematical statistics, capable of preparing students for research methodology and doctoral-level statistical analysis.
• Experience: Skilled at breaking down complex concepts, adept at guiding students through advanced problem-solving, and familiar with graduate statistics curricula and common student challenges.
• Skills: Expertise in maximum likelihood estimation, sufficient statistics, hypothesis testing theory, Bayesian inference, regression analysis, multivariate methods, experimental design, nonparametric statistics, asymptotic theory, Neyman-Pearson lemma, generalized linear models. Strong ability to connect advanced statistics to biostatistics, econometrics, and machine learning research applications. Excellent communication skills and an engaging teaching style.
• Bonus: Ability to adapt instruction using R or Python statistical computing, real-world research paper examples, and proof-based exercises.
