The Tone:
This is a full-time role at Bloomington Police Department, located in Bloomington, IL. As a Patrol Officer, you will be the backbone of the department’s uniform force, serving as the focal point for all police activities within the community. This critical general duty position is centered on the protection of life and property, enforcement of laws and ordinances, and the vital preservation of social order and public peace. Your work directly contributes to the safety and well-being of Bloomington residents by delivering essential police services.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Conduct Patrols: Engage in preventive patrol activities, either in vehicles or on foot, within a designated area to ensure accountability and maintain a visible police presence, enforcing laws and ordinances.
• Investigate Incidents: Perform preliminary investigations, working to prevent and suppress crime, apprehend criminal offenders, and recover lost or stolen property.
• Regulate Traffic: Actively enforce traffic laws and control traffic flow to ensure safety and order on public roadways.
• Maintain Public Order: Preserve and maintain social order and public peace, exercising significant discretion to balance individual rights with community safety.
• Document and Testify: Accurately write reports, collect, preserve, and store evidence, and provide clear and factual courtroom testimony.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Possess a high school diploma or its equivalent, be a United States Citizen, and have the legal ability to possess a firearm.
• Experience: Be at least 20 years of age at the time of application (and not more than 34 years of age), and at least 21 years of age to accept the appointment.
• Skills: Exhibit strong discretion in interpreting and enforcing laws, balancing individual rights with community safety within departmental guidelines. Demonstrate exceptional multi-tasking abilities, performing complex job tasks under varying degrees of pressure, including operating a motor vehicle safely in emergency conditions. Communicate effectively via radio with telecommunicators and other officers, assessing threats and coordinating resources in a timely manner. Develop and adapt response strategies quickly while en route, considering officer safety and changing conditions. Master local geography, including street names, locations, and address numbering patterns, to efficiently navigate the community.
• Bonus: Veterans may exceed the maximum age provision by the number of years served on active military duty, up to 10 years.
