Engineering Intern
Department: Engineering
Job Summary
The Engineering Intern is responsible for working on various projects related to product development, product design, production system design, implementation, and improvement within the Engineering Department.
Major Responsibilities/Activities
- Create and Maintain Critical Documents: This includes, but is not limited to, drawings and other technical documents related to project work, the laboratory quality manual, engineering action requests, testing records, training records, action orders, artifact records, calibration reports, as well as scheduling.
- Evaluate Products and Implement Changes: Under the direction of a designated supervisor, the intern will investigate and implement various product improvements. These investigations may include conducting testing, producing evaluation reports, updating engineering documents, making changes to bills of material, and issuing engineering change notices. This responsibility may also require close contact with vendors and suppliers. All issues will be tracked in the engineering action log associated with the given evaluation.
- Evaluate Processes and Implement Improvements: Under the direction of a designated supervisor, the intern will consider and implement production and process improvements. This could involve activities such as time efficiency studies, cost analysis, proposing process changes, and, if additional equipment is necessary, determining its specifications.
- Undertake Project-Based Assignments: As a project engineering intern, additional assignments may be given which could require the utilization of various company resources to achieve tasks. Such projects might require skills or resources outside of the normal scope of the position, however, such assignments are to be expected.
Minimum Requirements
- Education: Must have obtained or be actively in the process of obtaining an Associate’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial and Manufacturing technology, or a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent.
- Software Proficiency: Demonstrated proficiency with MS Word, MS Outlook, MS Excel, and possibly Ignite, CREO and/or AutoCAD.
- 3D Modeling Software: Experience with a 3D modeling software package such as SolidWorks, Solid Edge, or CREO. Hormann LLC maintains licenses of CREO, therefore, experience with this package is preferred.
- Project Management: Ability to work on several projects concurrently.
- Flexibility: Ability to work flexible hours when required to complete necessary job functions.
- Compliance: Conduct activities by adhering to established procedures and approved methods.
- Safety: Must promote a safe work environment.
Essential Mental Functions
- Must be able to follow an established routine and be predisposed to a high level of interaction in a team environment.
- Successful candidates must be highly organized, self-motivated individuals who can work independently without continuous supervision.
- Be detailed in the creation or review of published documents.
- Be detailed in his/her work, taking special precautions with regards to safety and quality.
- Be open and honest with fellow staff members and the engineering manager to ensure the quality of work performed while fostering an open, honest, and ethical work environment.
Essential Physical Functions
- Although the employee is not expected to perform extraneous physical activities, 50-60% of the day-to-day work for this position will be focused on the production floor, therefore, they must be physically able to safely maneuver in production areas.
- May require walking primarily on a level surface for specific periods throughout the day.
- Reaching above shoulder heights, below the waist or lifting as required to file documents or store materials throughout the workday.
Equipment Used
An Engineering Intern may be required to use a variety of precision measuring devices as well as various computer-based software packages.
Additional Comments
