About the Job: Registered Nurse – University Hospital-Operating Room Internship

This is a “multiple-fill” job opening for four (4) Full-Time, Registered Nurses. The selected candidates will have identical hours and shifts, detailed below.

Hourly Wage and Differentials:

  • Hourly range for Registered Nurses: $41.78 – $64.81 / hour
  • Evening Shift Differential: $3.00 / hour
  • Night Shift Differential: $4.00 / hour
  • Day Shift Weekend Differential: $2.90 / hour
  • Evening Shift Weekend Differential: $5.90 / hour
  • Night Shift Weekend Differential: $6.90 / hour

Responsibilities*

This position is for a University Hospital-Operating Room Internship, a comprehensive six-month operating room orientation program. This educational program offers a valuable and unique career opportunity for both graduate nurses and registered nurses. It is designed to teach a wide range of skills and knowledge, preparing the intern for a new role as a perioperative nurse. The internship program combines classroom instruction, laboratory experience, and direct patient care settings.

The internship position is 40 hours per week and will involve Day/Evening shifts, with required call and weekend/holiday obligations. The anticipated start date for this internship is May 2026.

Note: The UH-OR internship requires a two-year commitment to working in the UH-OR upon completion of the program.

Nursing Specific Information

This UMPNC RN posting is listed as Nursing Framework LEVEL C. The actual Nursing Framework LEVEL and salary will be determined at the time of hire. Nursing Framework levels range from Level A to Level F.

Required qualifications must be met by the candidate to be interviewed and considered. The posting may be filled after the initial 5-day posting period. Applicants who have left the UMPNC bargaining unit must include dates of past employment (months and years of service along with effort) on their resume. Positions less than 20 hours/week may be combined.

Required Qualifications*

  • Current Michigan RN license for all candidates who have passed the NCLEX.
  • Graduate Nurse (GN) applicants will be considered. Selected Graduate Nurse candidates will have 45 days from the date of hire to successfully pass the NCLEX for Michigan RN licensure.
  • Call commitment with a 30-minute response time.
  • All required qualifications must be met prior to the start date of employment.

NOTE: All applicants selected for an interview will complete a ½ day observation in the UH-OR (unpaid).

Desired Qualifications*

  • BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing)
  • Operating Room experience
  • A satisfactory attendance record, proven by employment references
  • Ability to work with a non-responsive patient population
  • Demonstrated ability to handle stress, conflict, and resolution
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, with the ability to work as a team member

Work Schedule

  • Hours: 40 hours/week
  • Shift: Day/Evening rotation with call and weekend/holiday obligations.
  • Location: University Hospital-Operating Room

All new employees will be expected to float to a designated unit(s) in times of low census.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
