Structural Transmission Engineer | Barr

The Tone:
This is a full-time role at Barr, located in Minneapolis, MN (Hybrid). Barr’s power delivery group designs and engineers high-voltage transmission and distribution lines for diverse clients, including electric utilities and renewable energy companies. In this pivotal role, you will be a key part of contributing to the design and engineering of critical infrastructure, developing comprehensive design documents and specifications for wood and steel pole structures and performing essential foundation design and calculations.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Transmission Line Design: Utilize PLS-CADD software to design transmission lines ranging from 69kV to 345kV, ensuring technical accuracy and compliance with stringent industry standards.
• Specification Development: Create detailed construction and material specifications for wood and steel pole structures, crucial for safe and efficient field implementation.
• Foundation Design: Perform drilled pier foundation design and embedment depth calculations, directly contributing to the structural integrity and stability of transmission systems.
• Drawing Production and Review: Produce and meticulously review design drawings, including plan and profile views, framing, and assembly details, to support seamless project execution.
• Project Documentation: Effectively use Microsoft Office Suite and other engineering tools to document work, facilitate team communication, and manage project data.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree in Civil and/or Structural Engineering or a related discipline. Early career level, demonstrating a proactive problem-solving approach and collaborative mindset.
• Experience: Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certified or the ability to obtain within one year. Willingness and ability to travel as needed for field assignments, potentially involving short-term, out-of-town work.
• Skills: Familiarity with AutoCAD, Excel, and Word; willingness to learn and effectively use specialized programs such as PLS-CADD software. Must possess a current, valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
