Health System Specialist (GHATP Trainee) | VA Healthcare System

The Tone:
This is an early career training position within the VA Healthcare System, focusing on developing future leaders for medical facilities nationwide. The VA Healthcare System provides comprehensive healthcare services to veterans across the country. This role is crucial for equipping the trainee with essential knowledge, skills, and competencies to support the Medical Center Director’s Office in achieving its mission and strategic objectives. The one-year program is designed to build upon and enhance graduate-level education in healthcare administration.

The TL;DR

• Team: Office of the Director of the Medical Facility
• Mission: To acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to support the Medical Center Director in meeting strategic goals and mission objectives.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Project Management: Manage, lead, and administer comprehensive project plans, including meeting objectives, assigning resources, ensuring quality assurance, and delivering briefings and presentations.
• Data Analysis and Planning: Utilize data and reporting tools to develop health-planning strategies and analyze trends in budget and fiscal operations.
• Operational Improvement: Participate in project teams to identify and implement improvements to operational processes impacting VA healthcare system services.
• Administrative Observation: Observe and report on various administrative functions, including discipline, rewards, reassignment, labor/management relationships, and grievance processes to understand project and study conduct.
• Facility Rotations: Perform rotations and on-site visits to network and other VA/VHA facilities to identify and recommend solutions for issues and opportunities.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Early Career professional with a master’s degree (completed within the last 2 years, or 6 years for preference-eligible veterans) or 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education.
• Experience: For current or former federal employees, 52 weeks of service at the GS-07 grade in the federal service is required.
• Skills: Strong analytical skills for data interpretation and trend analysis, project management capabilities, knowledge of budget and fiscal operations, and an understanding of healthcare administration policies and procedures.
