Group/Division: Global Products Group (GPG) & Central Engineering
With over 40 years of semiconductor process control experience, KLA is relied upon by chipmakers globally to ensure rapid and cost-effective ramp-up of next-generation devices to volume production. The Global Products Group (GPG) is responsible for creating all of KLA’s metrology and inspection products and is actively seeking top talent in various engineering disciplines.
Central Engineering is KLA’s largest engineering organization, comprising 9 Centers-of-Excellence (CoE) that apply expertise across all product groups. These CoE include: Handling & Automation, Precision Motion Control, Sensors & Image Acquisition, Platform Design, and Packaging Engineering, among others. With over 500 engineers across global centers in Israel, China, India, and the US, each CoE contributes:
- Talent and deliverables per discipline toward product programs.
- Subject matter expertise and best practices.
- Roadmaps, specialized facilities, apparatus, models, and analytics.

Job Title: Opto-Mechanical Sub-Component Development Intern
Location: Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA
Job Summary
KLA is seeking high-energy interns for exciting summer projects at our Ann Arbor, Michigan location. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience and learn about best-in-class industrial equipment for the semiconductor industry. The intern will focus on performing engineering work to develop opto-mechanical sub-components for KLA’s advanced inspection tools.
Responsibilities
The successful intern will:
- Work self-motivated within a team of interns and engineers on a specific aspect of a larger project.
- Design, model, and document optical systems.
- Collaborate with engineers from diverse fields, including electrical engineering, optical engineering, and computer science.
- Utilize CAD and optical ray-tracing packages for design and analysis.
- Perform hands-on set-up and alignment of opto-mechanical sub-assemblies in a laboratory environment.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a graduate program in Optics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Possess immigration authorization to undertake corporate internship projects.
- Requires less than 1 year of related experience.
Desired Qualifications & Education
The ideal candidate should possess:
- Strong academic background with completed coursework in optics.
- Solid knowledge of opto-mechanical fundamentals.
- Strong analytical capabilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills, demonstrating perseverance and the ability to work collaboratively within a team setting, including individuals across different geographies.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Zemax.
- Experience with CREO.
Compensation & Benefits
Base Pay Range: $26.00 – $38.00 per hour, based on pursuit of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.
Interns are eligible for some of KLA’s benefits. Our pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The displayed range reflects the pay for this position in the primary location identified in this posting. Actual pay depends on several factors, including state minimum pay wage rates, location, job-related skills, experience, and relevant education level or training.
