Recycling Program Worker | Naval Station Mayport, MWR Department

The Tone:
This is a manual labor role within the Recycling Program of the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Department at Naval Station Mayport, located in Jacksonville, Florida. The Recycling Program is vital for managing waste and supporting environmental efforts on the naval base. This role directly contributes to the program’s success by ensuring proper segregation of materials, efficient operation of recycling equipment, and safe transportation of recycled goods. Your efforts will help maintain a clean and sustainable environment for the Naval Station Mayport community.

The TL;DR

• Location: Jacksonville, Florida
• Team: Recycling Program MWR Department, reporting to the Recycling Manager
• Mission: To manage and process recyclable materials and operate associated equipment and vehicles.
• Tech Stack: cardboard balers, can crushers, drills, portable chop saws, hand grinders, cutting torches, gasoline and/or diesel generators, cargo vans, stake bodied trucks, 6- and 15-thousand-pound forklifts, skid steer loaders, pick-up trucks with trailers, lift gates, electric hand trucks, pallet jacks, dollies

What You’ll Actually Do
• Segregate Materials: Learn to accurately separate various paper products (cardboard, sorted office paper, newsprint, colored paper) and metal types (ferrous from non-ferrous, aluminum from steel, copper from brass, CuNi, bronze).
• Operate Equipment: Operate equipment such as cardboard balers, can crushers, drills, portable chop saws, and hand grinders, with potential training for cutting torches and generators.
• Maintain Equipment: Inspect recycling equipment for cleanliness, perform minor preventive maintenance, and report any needed repairs to the Recycling Manager.
• Transport Materials: Operate various vehicles, including cargo vans, stake bodied trucks, forklifts, skid steer loaders, and pick-up trucks with trailers, both on and off base, ensuring proper loading and securing of all items.
• Adhere to Safety & Vehicle Care: Exercise continual care to prevent accidents, abide by all safety rules, wear appropriate personal protective equipment, perform pre-operation vehicle checks, and maintain vehicle cleanliness.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Meet Federal Employment suitability requirements, successfully complete a background investigation, pass the E-verify employment verification check, and complete a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process. Be able to pass a pre-employment physical examination and obtain a forklift license.
• Experience: Specialized experience directly related to the duties, equivalent to the next lower level. Experience includes basic operations of cardboard balers, can crushers, drills, portable chop saws, and hand grinders, with the capability to learn additional equipment. Ability to identify ferrous from non-ferrous metal after initial training.
• Skills: Valid state driver’s license (specifically a Florida driver’s license), ability to lift items weighing over 50 pounds, manual skill for loading/unloading very heavy items, safely operating various vehicles and weight-handling devices, and performing vehicle maintenance checks.
