Early Career Firmware Engineer | Western Digital

The Tone:
This is an early career role at Western Digital, with opportunities located across California, Colorado, New York, or remotely within these states. Western Digital pioneers storage technology, from HDDs to platforms, empowering businesses, creative professionals, and consumers. This role is crucial for designing and delivering embedded firmware that directly impacts the performance of enterprise data centers and cloud infrastructure, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in data storage. As part of a structured Early Career program, you’ll gain foundational training, learn our technology stack, and contribute to real features that ship to customers, working alongside experienced engineers.

The TL;DR

• Mission: Design and ship embedded firmware that powers enterprise storage products.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Design: Create embedded system components following best-practice development methodologies.
• Validate: Write comprehensive tests, debug issues, and ensure superior code quality before customer delivery.
• Triage: Conduct first-level investigations into host and performance problems.
• Collaborate: Work closely with core firmware engineers, integrate code, participate in code reviews, and learn the full product lifecycle.
• Own: After initial training, independently deliver tasks that directly ship to customers.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently pursuing or recently completed a BS/MS degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience. This is an early career position.
• Experience: A solid understanding of how software interacts with hardware in embedded systems, coupled with comfort in writing, debugging, and testing C++ code.
• Skills: C++ Coding, Embedded Systems Fundamentals, Python Familiarity.
