The Tone:
This is a 6-month, full-time co-op position at Eversource, located in Westwood, MA. Eversource is a regulated utility company that manages electric and gas operations, providing essential infrastructure to communities. This role offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in environmental compliance and permitting, directly contributing to the protection of natural resources while supporting the development and maintenance of vital utility projects. You will play a crucial role in ensuring that all projects adhere to stringent environmental regulations and permitting strategies.

The TL;DR

• Pay: $20.60–$27.38 hourly
• Team: Sustainability and Environmental Affairs team, supporting Licensing & Permitting staff
• Mission: Supports environmental reviews and permitting processes for electric and gas operations to ensure compliance and natural resource protection.
• Tech Stack: MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, Adobe, ESRI GIS products

What You’ll Actually Do
• Environmental Reviews: Conduct environmental reviews for projects, utilizing GIS mapping tools to identify potential constraints and resource areas.
• Permit Determination: Assist in reviewing mapped project areas to determine required local, state, and federal permits and environmental constraints.
• Regulatory Communication: Prepare maintenance notification letters to facilitate clear communication with regulatory agencies regarding project scope.
• Field Support: Conduct essential field work, including site visits to substations, construction sites, and company rights-of-way, and collect soil or water samples.
• Compliance Monitoring: Support construction compliance inspections to ensure adherence to permits, mitigation requirements, and company Best Management Practices.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program, at least a second-year student, majoring in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Engineering, or Geographic Information Systems (GIS), or a related discipline.
• Experience: A strong interest in environmental permitting, sustainability, environmental compliance, or infrastructure projects, along with a willingness to conduct field work at active sites.
• Skills: Ability to interpret maps and environmental data effectively; functional proficiency with MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, Adobe, and ESRI GIS products; strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
• Bonus: A valid driver’s license and access to a personally owned vehicle to support required site inspections.
