Junior Laboratory Associate

The Bergelson lab at NYU’s Department of Biology is looking for a highly motivated and independent individual to work as a Junior Laboratory Associate.

This position is for a trainee preparing for a research path. It will provide development of technical skills; supervision by senior scientists incorporating individual development plan in support of training goals and those of faculty mentor; and possible publication of research findings during appointment period.

Projects in the Bergelson lab center around the ecology and evolution of plant-pathogen interactions. One main line of research in the lab is understanding the mechanism shaping plant resistance gene evolution. For more information about our past and ongoing work, visit bergelsonlab.org.

Responsibilities May Include

  • Conducting genomic analyses using PacBio and Illumina sequencing data from 300 accessions of Arabidopsis thaliana, Cardamine hirsuta, and Draba verna sampled from natural populations in France.
  • Contrasting patterns of differential evolution in plant disease resistance genes across the Brassicaceae to identify ecological drivers of preferential gene retention and loss among naturally co-occurring species.
  • Inferring subgenome and chromosomal ancestral origins within the polyploidarchitecture of the Draba verna pangenome, building on prior contributions to its construction.

Salary Range

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $55,000 – $60,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.

Work Location

This position is based in New York and the selected candidate will be expected to work onsite as of their effective start date.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a BS or MS in Biology or a related field, 2 years of research experience, excellent communication and organizational skills, and experience in de novo assembly and annotation of complex plant genomes, along with comparative genomics.
