Job Description

Video Algorithm Engineer (Graduate) | ByteDance

The Tone:
This is an early career position at ByteDance, located in the US. Our team is dedicated to designing and optimizing the next-generation end-to-end video system, covering production, processing, delivery, and consumption. This role is crucial for significantly improving the Quality of Experience (QoE) for our billions of global users by building large-scale, high-performing video platforms and services.

The TL;DR
• Role: Early Career
• Type: Full-time
• Location: In-person, US-based
• Pay: $136800–$259200 yearly
• Team: Dedicated to designing and optimizing the next-generation end-to-end video system.
• Mission: Improve the Quality of Experience (QoE) for billions of users globally by optimizing video production, processing, delivery, and consumption.
• Tech Stack: C, C++, Python, sklearn, OpenCV, FFmpeg, TensorFlow, PyTorch, HDFS

What You’ll Actually Do
• Design: Create sophisticated video analysis algorithms, including Region of Interest (ROI) / Saliency Object Detection (SOD), content understanding, and temporal grounding.
• Develop: Engineer and optimize quality assessment algorithms, actively participating in database creation, algorithm design, development, and optimization processes.
• Strategize: Contribute to designing the overall strategy and solutions for End-to-End (E2E) video quality optimization, integrating advanced video analysis, processing, and encoding algorithms.
• Apply: Implement designed algorithms for various applications such as Video on Demand (VOD) / Live streaming monitoring, comprehensive data analysis, and objective evaluation of algorithms.
• Collaborate: Work effectively with cross-functional teams to integrate algorithms into production workflows and rigorously validate their impact through A/B testing.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Final year Ph.D. candidate or recent Ph.D. graduate in Computer Science, engineering, or a quantitative field. This is an Early Career role, with in-depth knowledge of video analysis algorithms or subjective/objective video quality algorithms.
• Experience: Familiarity with state-of-the-art technologies in video analysis and quality algorithms, with a commitment to an onboarding date by the end of 2026.
• Skills: Proficiency in at least one of the following programming languages: C, C++, or Python.
• Bonus: Familiarity with Machine Learning (ML) and image processing tools (sklearn, OpenCV, FFmpeg); deep learning frameworks (TensorFlow / PyTorch); Transformer architectures and mainstream multi-modal large models (MLLMs) with hands-on experience; Linux development environments, shell scripting, HDFS; common video processing algorithms (super-resolution, diffusion models); great communication skills, eagerness to learn, and a passion for translating cutting-edge technologies into real-life use cases.
