Job Description

We are currently looking for an Engineering Intern to join our team in Alexandria, VA.

Responsibilities

Modern Technology Solutions, Inc. (MTSI) is seeking a Digital Engineering Intern specializing in Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and Data Integration to join our team for the summer of 2026. You will be introduced to Systems Engineering, Mission Engineering, Model Curation, and Data Integration to identify needs and requirements, capture concepts, develop models, and develop presentable artifacts to inform decision making. You will work with one of our experienced engineers in the National Capital region supporting various mission areas for National Defense sector customers. This opportunity will introduce you to systems engineering, defense missions, architecture modeling and analysis, and leveraging models to inform stakeholders.

The period of this internship will be approximately June – August of 2026. The chosen applicant will be expected to apply for a U.S. government security clearance, as applicable, upon acceptance of an offer.

Mission Engineering Support

  • Research and develop descriptive architecture models of complex kill chains, kill webs, and effects-based solutions that reflect military employment strategies from tactical to strategic levels.
  • These systems-of-systems models enable gap analysis, inform design improvements, and highlight new technology applications.
  • Using Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools such as Cameo, you will create precise visualizations and conduct analyses to deliver actionable insights that address key operational challenges.
  • Collaborate in a fast-paced, innovative environment at the forefront of emerging defense technologies and future warfighting concepts.

Intel Support

  • Employ an MBSE approach to analysis to correlate complex, technical findings into graphical, written, visual, and verbal narrative products on trends of existing intelligence data.
  • Contribute to best-practice recommendations on managing data with hardware, software, storage, and bandwidth constraints.
  • Employ exploratory analysis and rapid iteration techniques of large volumes of data to quickly derive intelligence.
  • Prepare products to describe and document findings and activities.

General Responsibilities

  • Generate system concept of operations, concept of employment, and requirements documentation.
  • Participate in system testing and integration using model-based systems engineering tools and techniques.
  • Learn about and utilize advanced systems, such as command-and-control elements and data processing systems.
  • Participate in system requirements reviews and create and/or update requirement specifications and technical documentation.
  • Review system engineering documentation to ensure specifications meet system needs and are accurate.
  • Participate in the development of trade studies to support the selection preferred design solutions and course of action alternatives in project development/product delivery.
  • Provide review and analysis support to test team development and conduct of formal testing.
  • Participate in project technical risk analysis and mitigation.

Qualifications

  • Education: BS or MS in an Engineering degree.
  • Experience/Knowledge:
    • Knowledge or recent experience integrating systems processes and/or software development methodologies, planning, designing and analyzing functional system processes.
    • Interest in M&S (Modeling & Simulation), OA (Operations Analysis).
    • Understanding of system interface requirements and requirements management.
    • Experience with Microsoft products including Office and SharePoint.
  • Work Ethic:
    • Comfortable supporting multiple concurrent projects in a dynamic environment.
    • Self-motivated and able to work independently with help from experienced team members.
  • Communication:
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment; present and explain technical information to colleagues, management or sponsors.
  • Commitment:
    • Graduating in CY2027, not committed to other organizations after graduation and would consider joining MTSI in Washington DC area after graduation.
    • Interested to leverage the capabilities of their university to support current & future work.
  • Security Clearance: Has a US Secret clearance (preferred) or is able to apply for a clearance with MTSI assistance.

Desired Skills

  • Experience with SysML and/or UAFML.
  • Experience with Enterprise Architecture tools such as Cameo System Modeler, or equivalent.
  • Experience with languages such as Python.
  • Some experience with data visualization tools such as PowerBI, Tableau, or equivalent.
  • Knowledge in Java and Javascript usage for macro development in EA tooling.

Clearance: Ability to obtain/maintain a US government security clearance.
