The Engineering team at Rainmaker is the core of our technical advancements, focusing intensely on our UAS platform, specialized dispersion payload, and integrated in-situ/remote sensing systems. Reporting Structure:
In this crucial role, you will be reporting directly to the Lead Mechanical Engineer.

Role Summary:
As a Mechanical Engineering Intern, you will be an integral part of our team, working hands-on with mission-critical subsystems for our state-of-the-art UAS platform. Your work will span the entire product development lifecycle, offering direct exposure to the operational impact of your designs.

What You’ll Do:

  • Rapid Hardware Prototyping:
    • Design and build highly functional prototypes for various UAS subsystems.
    • Iterate quickly and efficiently based on invaluable flight test feedback and evolving mission requirements.
  • Test Fixture Design & Execution:
    • Assist in the conceptualization, design, and construction of robust test fixtures for prototype components.
    • Conduct thorough testing using these fixtures to validate component performance and reliability.
  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA):
    • Collaborate closely with mechanical engineers to precisely define loading and boundary conditions.
    • Set up, run, and meticulously validate comprehensive FEA studies.
  • Technical Documentation:
    • Write clear and concise technical documentation for designs.
    • Prepare detailed fabrication and assembly data packages for external manufacturers.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration:
    • Work seamlessly with electrical engineers, software engineers, and manufacturing teams to ensure integrated and compatible system designs.

Required Qualifications:

  • CAD Proficiency:
    • Demonstrated experience with Solidworks (required).
    • Experience with Onshape feature scripting is considered a significant bonus.
  • FEA Expertise:
    • Hands-on experience with Solidworks FEA, specifically including:
      • Linear Static Analysis
      • Linear Dynamic Analysis
      • Nonlinear Dynamic Analysis
      • Thermal Analysis
  • Design for Manufacturability (DFM):
    • Proven experience in designing parts with a strong understanding of DFM principles.
  • Prototyping & Manufacturing:
    • Practical experience with basic manufacturing and rapid prototyping techniques, particularly using 3D printers.
  • Basic Electrical Knowledge:
    • Comfortable working with microcontroller breakout boards for simple prototyping tasks.
  • Applied Technical Ability:
    • Demonstrated application of technical skills outside of academic coursework through:
      • Personal projects
      • Research initiatives
      • Extracurricular activities
      • Prior internship or relevant work experience
